There may also have been a verge inscription, also now gone: Margaret, fifth daughter of the most illustrious Edward IV, King of England and France, and Elizabeth his Queen, his most serene Consort. She was born the 19th day of April, Ano. Dom. 1472, died the 11th of Dec, on whose soul God have mercy. Amen.7 If this is a true depiction of the original inscription, then it would pinpoint Margaret’s birth at 19th April, not 10th as believed.

Margaret’s death bought the year to a sad end, but the deeply religious family would have grieved for her whilst taking some comfort knowing she was safely at rest in the arms of Elizabeth’s mother. As she said a sad goodbye to her young daughter, Elizabeth may have been in the first few weeks of her next pregnancy, that of her second son, Richard, who would be born in August the following year, and would once again restore hope to the royal family as they ended 1472 and passed into the new year of 1473.
